Big Data in the world of Private Equity

What does “Big Data” mean?

The increasing availability of data is important to the way in which companies approach business issues. By using data appropriately, companies can make rapid, informed decisions. The development of complex IT programs is required to extract and analyze strategic information from big data. Strategic information is highly important to business, and is now available through unstructured digital channels like smart phone applications, social media, and other emerging internet platforms and applications. “Big data” is an all-encompassing term describing the cumulation of currently accessible data. Value is the key concept here, referring both to the value resulting from the use of big data and to the cost of the technology required to analyze such large volumes of information.
To quantify big data, experts usually use petabytes and exabytes. Did you know that approximately 90% of all the data in the world was created in the last two years? Nowadays, companies have to deal with these massive volumes of data. They have to collect, store, manage and analyze them to improve their managerial decision making.

Big Data – impact on fundraising and deal sourcing

A fresh look at this topic focuses us on the central challenge, which is to understand the opportunities from this change. Nowadays, PE houses have to extract meaningful information from volumes of big data in order to make the best decisions in terms of acquisitions, public buyouts or IPOs. By using new analytics programs to analyze the data, PE houses will be able to invest in emerging trends, improve the quality and timeliness of their decision-making and minimize the chances of missing an investment. In addition, the new strategic information can increase accuracy in valuation of the target and improve management. Processing of information can result in better portfolio value for private equity and an increase in the net present value of individual businesses.

A long term challenge for venture capital

I am thinking hard about what is happening now and, most important, what we need to do in the future to provide optimal advice to all our clients.
There will be a need for a specialization to understand and make use of the new IT tools. Funds will need to understand the new and emerging businesses and activities. For instance, funds will need to become experts in information handling and to reinforce their capacity in data analysis for sectors such as R&D and businesses which sell information. The recruitment of experts by venture capital houses to maximize investment in specific targets of this kind will be a challenge in the near future. Are you going to rise to the challenge?
